'Maguffin'

A maguffin is something or a plot device that motivates the characters and makes the story more interesting. But this usually  has no other relevance to the story.

Suspense And Shocks Of Thrillers

Hitchcock uses a lot of suspense in his films. This is to keep the audience waiting to find out what is going to happen in the film. This also makes the viewer want to keep watching as they do not know what is going to happen. BUT this also makes the audience create scenes in their head before they actually happen as the viewer is waiting to find out what will happen. Usually the actual scene is totally different to what the viewer imagined.

This is one of the many reasons why Hitchcocks thrillers were so successful.
The rules of a thriller

some directors and film makers say 'there are no rules' or that 'the rules are there to be broken'.

But also some directors say that certain conventions that mainstream films observe in order for them to appeal to the biggest audience.

Most thrillers have the main features in their films such as:
  • different technical aspect
  • good Vs bad
  • dilemas
  • antagonists
  • main characters
  • heros
  • villans

some films that show this are 'children of men'

Friday, 23 November 2012

There are lots of different types of thrillers, such as spy thrillers, crime, disaster, supernatural and action thrillers.

In a disaster thriller the film is usually based around a disaster that has happened or is going to happen. some examples of disaster thrillers are 'Deep impact' and 'Earthquake'.

In crime thrillers there are usually based around a crime that is being planned or taking place or has already taken place, such as a bank robbery or a killing. Examples of a crime thriller are 'Seven' and 'The Killing'.

Supernatural Thrillers usually builds tension for the audience and is based on a supernatural element, such as werewolf's or vampires. There is also usually a hero or heros in this type of thriller. Some Supernatural thrillers are 'Unbreakable'

Action thrillers are always films that have to stick to a time. The heros must always complete a task in the given time, and this would build tension for the audience. 'James Bond' films are an example of this type of thriller.
At the end of our course we will be making a short sequence of a start to a thriller. this will be 3-4 minutes maximum long. We must show we understand all of the important parts to a thriller, we must show all of these techniques in our thriller.

North By North West

Another thriller film we have watched is North By North West, a Thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock. this was directed in 1959, and stars carry Grant, James Mason and Eva Mary Saint. James Mason who plays Roger Thornhill, gets Mistaken for a non existent person made up by the secret police, called George Kaplan. He is then kidnapped by 2 men and is taken to a big house in Long Island, owned by Lester Townsend. who then drug "George" and put him in a car, hoping he would crash and die... But he manages to control the car then he gets pulled over by the police and taken to the police station. The police do not believe his story so he starts to find out whats going on himself. On this mission to find out what is going on he meets Eve, a pretty blonde woman. He meets her on a train journey and ends up spending the night with her, but she has to hide him from the police as they are looking for him.

As Roger overcomes many obstacles that are trying to kill him, such as the plane trying to kill him, and being shot at on Mount Rushmore. He stall manages to stay alive and protect Eve. At the end of the film we see Roger and his new wife Eve, on a train going through a tunnel.

In North By North West, Hitchcock uses a lot of diagetic and non diagetic sounds, and the fast music creates some tension between the viewers and the characters.

The Birds

As A Level media students, we watch a lot of thriller films. One of these films is "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock. This film has the actress Tippi Hendren playing one of the main characters called Melanie Daniels. Playing the main male character is called Rod Taylor and he plays Mitch Brenner.
The thriller starts with Mitch Brenner Meeting Melanie in a pet shop in San Francisco, and mentions that he was looking for Love Birds for his sister for her birthday. But then melanie Daniels orders two of the birds and decides to drive to Bodega Bay where the Brenners live. In secret Miss Daniels takes a boat across the lake to the Brenners house and put the birds there without being seen. But on her way back across the lake, a bird swoops down and scratches her head. Luckily Mitch Brenner was already waiting for her at the harbour. The Bird attacks started becoming more frequent and the birds started attacking in bigger groups. towards the end of the film. The Brenners decide to board up their house to protect the family. But as everyone falls to sleep Melanie is left awake by the rustling noises coming from upstairs, she takes the light and goes to see what the noise is. As she enters the room, she see's that there are hundreds of birds just waiting there, the door jams closed and all of the birds attack Melanie. Mitch and his mother save Miss Daniels but she is still distraught from this attack. They make a decision to escape from the house. They get away safely, but we don't know what could happen next!!
